CheckboxPlugin considered dangerous

CheckboxPlugin from TiddlyTools should not be used with mGSD/MonkeyGTD. It seems to corrupt tiddler content by replacing text inside tiddlers with X chars. This can break views and templates in mGSD.

Calendar gets some TLC

Can now configure calendar popups to show weeks starting weeks on Monday instead of Sunday. (Find the checkbox under more/MGTD).
Calendar will no longer hide days in the month before and after the current month
There is a new repeat option called Fortnightly for ticklers that you want to repeat every two weeks

Bugfix for single quotes in titles

Plus a few other things... In brief:

Single quote bugfix (actually it was a reintroduced bug, not and old one as I had thought). Thanks to the users who brought this up on the mailing list.
A new view/report/page (what are we calling these things..?) showing Someday/Maybe projects without a tickler. Ignore this if you don't care for it, but the idea is that if you put a tickler on your S/Ms then you are reminded to evaluate them periodically.
Tickler without a date is now considered active. This seems to make slightly more sense the the previous behaviour. So give your tickler a date if you want it to go away from view. (This and the previous items contributed by Arkady Grudzinsky
If you don't want to see an alert when an action is automatically made 'Next' because it's dependent action is completed then it's configurable via a checbox under More.. MGTD.
A new tiddler called MgtdSidebarExtra. It ships empty but if you put something in it it will appear above the tabs on the right. Use it to provide easier access to your most commonly used pages/views.
Autosave now works when creating actions/projects/ticklers etc. (Thanks Kevin O'Neil).

You can update in the usual way. Looks like the new version number 9813.

Support for action dependencies

Carsten Thiele and Kralik have done some great work* on one of the most requested features, action dependencies. Based largely on the Carsten's SequencedActionsPlugin (with some changes to use tag indexing for speed), and Kralik's UI adjustments, I've added this feature into MonkeyGTD.

At the moment I'm only using it for Actions and not Ticklers (as per SequenceActionsPlugin) just for the sake of keeping things simple but I can see that it would be useful for Ticklers also. Once again it's pretty new so perhaps hold of updating unless you've been waiting on this feature. Let me know if you find bugs.

Some notes:

I'm providing an alert when an action is promoted to Next or demoted to Future based on the Done checkbox of the action it's dependant on.
The 'create dependant action' button is not there yet, since it doesn't work with TW core 2.4.1 which is the one I'm testing with at the moment.
There's also a speedup fix and a bug fix for changing Actions/Projects/Ticklers provided by Jason Dunham
For a demo of the new functionality click here and mark Action A as done. Then mark as not done. It's easy to specify that an action has a dependency using the drop down selector.
The action is getting cluttered with the contact and now the depends on drop down. I've but the depends on drop down after a br tag, but it probably need some layout tweaks. Suggestions welcome.
If you delete an action that another action is waiting on you probably should get a warning. Or at least there should be a page that shows actions that are waiting on a non-existent action. But lets not worry about that at present.
Multiple dependencies are supported and work. But it's not easy to create them as the drop downs let you select one only. You have to manually edit tags to do it.

Jason Dunham has done some great work customising his MonkeyGTD to add some additional Project (and Action) classifications. Basically what he wanted was something in between Active and Someday/Maybe which he has labelled Pending for projects and Queued for actions.

Bug when converting periodic tickler to an action it would become a once only tickler tickler (Thanks Kralik for this one also)
Fix for TiddlyWeb users as suggested here. (Note the hijacking issue discussed still and issue, though perhaps it could be solved by renaming MgtdIndexedTags to ZZMgtdIndexTags...?)
You can now use shorthand in QuickAdd for Projects, S, SM, A for Starred, Someday/Maybe, Active (as well as the existing W, N, F, S for actions). For example in quick add:

A someday project|SM
.a future action|F
.a next action

You can now use ;; in QuickAdd to delimit content of the tiddler. (Previously ; was an alternative to | but ;; didn't work). Eg, a new SM project in area Friends with some notes,

Save message is cleared if you mark something as done. This is so you're less likely to think you don't need to save when actually you do. (Thanks to the person who suggested this.. sorry I couldn't find the email just now..)
New tiddler method similar to hasActiveProject called hasStarredProject. Contributed by Bernhardt Rainer, thanks Bernhardt. This isn't used in any of the stock views as yet, but view customised can make use of it in their custom views.
When making a project into a Tickler, set it to Someday/Maybe. This trick makes it's actions disappear from most action dashboards, which is what you want when a Project is made a Tickler. Thanks to Jorge A. Ramos M. for this neat suggestion.
A button to make an action into a reference item. Suggested by Bernhardt Rainer.
Undated ticklers now sort to the end. They were sorting by their updated date which made no sense at all. Bug reported by Jacques.
New improved (and maybe less confusing) version number. It's the svn revision.
Use data url for the logo in the top left instead of fetching it. Works only in firefox.

So let me know if you have troubles. And if you're the cautious type it might pay to hold off a bit on this one until the dust settles, just in case there are some bugs. And thanks for the support, patience, feedback, suggestions, contributions.

I'm using this release on a 2.4.1 TW core. I've not jumped to the new 2.5 with jQuery yet, though I'm interested to hear from anyone who has.

Here's a new feature you can try with your MonkeyGTD on Tiddlyspot.

Go to your controlpanel, ie http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com/controlpanel (just visiting the page is sufficient, it just refreshes a couple of things)
Grab your iPhone (you can also try it on your computer of course) and navigate to http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com/nextactions
If you want just a certain realm then put it in the url like this for example: http://yoursite.tiddlyspot.com/nextactions?realm=Personal

Before you get too excited, it's just a read-only view of just your next actions per context. But it might be handy if you're out and about and trying to remember that thing you're supposed to be doing.

Yes, you can change the value of a single Firefox Preference, to allow Local HTML Files to be saved without having to answer the question ever again. Type about:config in the Address Bar (Note the necessary Colon between the words "about" and "config"). Find the Preference called "security.fileuri.strict_
origin_policy". Double click on it to toggle it to a value of false. Restart Firefox to try it out. Be aware that this does alter the built-in security of Firefox.

(albeit minimally in my mind, for my own purposes - YMMV)

Chrome, we are clear for launch

It works and it's FAST!!!!!

Here's what I did:

Chrome updated itself at some point. This was automatic for me, in fact I didn't know it had happened. If you have updating switched off go to the spanner menu and click About Google Chrome. It should give you a chance to update there.
I put TiddlySaver.jar in the directory with my MonkeyGTD file.
Now when I loaded MonkeyGTD Chrome told me it wanted to install Java. I clicked OK and it downloaded and installed the latest beta of Java. Looks like version 6 Update 10.
When that was all done I tried a save. It asked me if I trusted TiddlerSaver signed by UnaMesa. I said Yes.
Then I saved and it worked!
(Though at first it was failing to save backup. I think perhaps Chrome is not able to create a directory (if you specify a directory for your backups). So adjust the directory in AdvancedOptions or create the directory if you need to. Once I did that backups worked fine).

Firefox, we'll always be friends.

I should mention that there are some cosmetic issues with the header and the blink tag doesn't work at the moment.

And... I just tried a Tiddlyspot upload which didn't work (though I think this has worked in the past). Will investigate this later.

As you might know MonkeyGTD runs pretty well in Chrome. The problem is you can't save. Jeremy Ruston has been looking at TiddlyWiki saving in Chrome and has found that it should work the same as Safari which requires a little java class to save TiddlyWiki files to disk. However there is a bug in chrome preventing it from working. My guess is it that it will be fixed soon but it might help if you "star" that issue to bring it to the attention of the Chrome developers. In related news I've heard that Firefox 3.1's new javascript engine will be comparable to Chrome's which should be good news for MonkeyGTD users.

That seems like a reasonable idea. Actually you can almost do this now by styling projectcontrols and actioncontrols. Try this for example: In the StyleSheet tiddler add:

Save and reload. It should also work for other types of tiddlers, eg .ticklercontrols, .areacontrols etc.

As far as I know this doesn't happen very much. Or ever. MonkeyGTD is based on TiddlyWiki which is a very mature and solid product. The "alpha" designation is because the UI needs a lot more polish before I'd called it finished. But it's used 'in production' by lots of people around the world who trust it not to suddenly lose their data.

Actually you don't have to know any wiki syntax to use MonkeyGTD. You can create and manage projects/actions/contexts etc without using it at all. It's only if you want to add notes to your projects or actions or reference items that you can use wiki syntax. But trust me it's not that bad. Here's a little example:

To change an action's context, click on the name of the action to open it, then uncheck the old context and check the new one. (Or if you have multiple contexts disabled then select the context from the drop down selector). This will update all your context lists appropriately. For instance, to see your actions for a certain context, click the name of the context under the "Do Work" tab on the right. At the moment projects don't have due date fields. One approach is to use ticklers. For instance in a project called "ProjectA" you could make a tickler on the applicable date called "ProjectA Final Deadline". Also make a few others, eg "ProjectA due one week from today". Or "... a month from today". Then you can look in your TicklerDashboard and see these things approaching.

A similar technique can be used to follow up delegations. You can convert your waiting for action to a tickler and give it a date which is the date you want to follow up with the associated contact.

This should work for grouping ticklers by contact. I will put it in an upcoming release:

Okay, the quality control on this release has been less than ideal. Perhaps there is such a thing as too early, too often. You guys have been super helpful in find the bugs though. The latest batch:

If your areas didn't have a realm then they weren't selectable in drop downs. You might not have noticed this if your areas all have realms. But now 'no realm' means effectively 'every realm' for the purposes of the drop down selectors. A consequence of this is that you can put other things in realms now like contacts (and even contexts*) if it makes sense to do so and the drop downs will reflect this.
Single quotes in projects or areas where causing macro errors. This is fixed now. I'd still not be surprised if single quotes in titles cause other more subtle weirdness though. Let me know if you find an easily demonstrable example of this.

* If you really want to use a realm specific context at the moment you'd have to add the tag manually. And it would only work properly with multiple contexts switched off since the checkboxes currently don't filter on realm.

As reported by ednz and Jeff last nights update broke the context drop down. (You wouldn't have noticed this if you have 'MultipleContexts' switched on in the options section under More/MGTD). Here's a little update to fix that.

Tips for not-so-obvious contexts

I've made a context called "this saturday". I use it in conjunction with other contexts like "call", "errand", "supermarket" etc. So on Saturday morning I can click on the context and there's a list of all the things I want to get done today. Another handy context I've used a few times is "before leaving". Let's say you're going away somewhere and there's a few loose ends to tie up before you go and perhaps things you need to pack like tickets and so on. Create actions for everything you have to do or pack as you think of them and give them the "before leaving" context. Then just make sure you do them (of course) and with a quick check that your "before leaving" context is empty, you can get in the taxi to the airport confident you didn't forget any of those big or little things. Do you have a handy context you'd like to share? Post in the comments. If there are any good ones I'll include them in an upcoming blog post.

It's supposed to be distracting. The way to stop the flashing is to deal with the tickler. Convert it to an action or a project perhaps? Put it back a day? A week? But, if you really must turn off the blink, here's what to do:

Click More/TW/Tags/systemConfig
Click the triangle down arrow and select MgtdList
Click 'edit' to edit
Find this line:

Change it to this:

Click 'done'
Save and reload.

Using timestamps to log activity within an action

Starting this week my boss wants weekly reports. To any MGTD user this is very easy. If you log your activities in the action tiddlers as I do, with a date time stamp (eg. "{t} - blah blah"), you just harvest the done or modded actions at the end of the week. What the Americans would call a "snap".

When coming back to work some more on an action (actions can get projecty), it is easy to see who you called, what was said etc. MGTD thus allows you to record and peruse different threads very easily. I have been looking for a tool that can do that since 1992. MGTD3 is easily the best so far.

That's a nice tip. From the usage description at InstantTimestampPlugin:

If you enter {ts} in your tiddler content (without the spaces) it will be replaced with a timestamp when you save the tiddler. Full list of formats:
{ts} or {t} -> timestamp
{ds} or {d} -> datestamp
!ts or !t at start of line -> !!timestamp
!ds or !d at start of line -> !!datestamp

Firstly, Danner Stodolsky has contributed a patch to NewSavedTiddlerPlugin that gives a more useful prompt when you create something. Instead of "Enter title for new tiddler" it will now say "Enter name for new Project" and the tooltip when you hover the mouse shows "Create a new Project" instead of "Create a new saved tiddler" for instance. Thanks Danner for this great patch. Secondly, there's some little links to the menu tiddlers in the menus now so you can more easily customise them. Though you should be aware that at present your menu (and other) customisations will be lost when you update. Thirdly, as suggested by a couple of people on the mailing list/google group, the drop down lists and the toggle tag lists (like context) have a new option for creating a new item on the fly. For instance instead of this:

Create action. Realise it needs a project
Create the project and name it
Notice the project isn't in the drop down list yet
Close the action and re-open it from somewhere
Now choose the project from the drop down

Now you can do this:

Create an action. Realise it needs a project
Click the drop down and select 'New Project...'
Name the project in the prompt window and you're done

This same works for contacts, areas, contexts, etc. Inspired in part by the add label controls in gmail...

How to get rid of those contexts/areas that you don't use

The empty file contains some example contexts and areas just so there's something there to start with. But it's highly likely you're going to want to remove some of those in your system. Here's how you can clean our your unused contexts and areas.

Update to the latest version
Click on any context (or area) to open it
In the top right click of the tiddler on the word Context (or Area)
From the list of contexts (or areas) click on the one you want to delete and then click delete. It's best if you make sure it's empty first.
Repeat the last step as required
(Note: you also can create a context (or area) by clicking 'new here' when looking at the list of contexts (or areas))

Another thing you can do is rename your contexts or areas. Do this by editing the context/area tiddler and changing it's name. Click 'done' and answer yes (okay) when it prompts you to rename the tag in N tiddlers and then your context or area will be cleanly renamed everywhere.

I'd like to help you figure out how to use the MonkeyGTD alpha 3.0. Where did you get stuck? It is still an alpha (as you mention) though I think it's pretty stable and usable as a GTD system provided you can forgive some rough edges. While it might certainly be described as slow, it is orders of magnitude faster than the 2.x version which had big problems with speed. Regarding enlisting a team of coders, well it would be nice! Some info on checking out the source and contributing patches is here.

Oh boy, this has been a disaster. So when I removed the 'Enabled' tag from ticklers I did an extremely poor job of it. Apologies. Last night I fixed the problem in the blinky alert but missed this one. Everyone please do this:

A journal is indistinguishable from a reference item once it's been created. The only thing special about a journal is that it will automatically be titled with the current date or time. (The date format is configurable under More/MGTD). Note that it makes most sense to use these buttons while viewing a Project. That way the journal or reference item will be associated with the project.

Thanks goes to SteveB on the google group/mailing list for this idea. It was a quick, easy way to turn those buttons into something useful in MonkeyGTD. Expect some revamping of the tiddler toolbar (which until now has been stock MPTW) at some point.

If you created an MGTD on Tiddlyspot in the last few days you would have had problems uploading/saving to web. This is because an older version of UploadPlugin being installed which has bugs in TW 2.4. To solve this problem you can either delete and recreate your site or update UploadPlugin from http://simontest-mgtdulp41.tiddlyspot.com/#UploadPlugin

All MGTD users on Tiddlyspot have the older UploadPlugin installed. You should also upgrade to the correct version of UploadPlugin. Import UploadPlugin from http://simontest-mgtdulp41.tiddlyspot.com/ using backstage/import. Then save and reload. Apologies for the inconvenience.

I got to you through James Fallows, who's singing your praises on his Atlantic blog. In any event, in IE7, my wiki looks nothing whatsoever like your demo. In particular there is no config button visible, which makes the whole thing useless, as I can't define contexts, tags, etc. Not quite ready for prime time, at least for me as I'm unwilling to download a new browser just for this. Nice idea; I like wikis generally and having my GTD system online rather than in a standalone program would be a huge plus for me.

Well the demo has some example projects and actions. When you download an empty MonkeyGTD it starts out with nothing in it. You create your projects and actions using the [+] buttons or the +project and +action buttons at the top. To create new contexts click on the "Process Inbox" tab on the right sidebar and click 'new context'. If you ever want to give it another try then please send me an email. I'd like to help you get started and perhaps learn which parts of the interface are the least intuitive from your perspective as a new user. I agree that MonkeyGTD is a lot more usable in Firefox that in IE. This is something I'm hoping to rectify in the future. Thanks very much for posting your feedback.

A MonkeyGTD tale of ticklers and contacts...

My motorcycle is at the shop. It's getting a reconditioned rear shock absorber. They said it would be 10-12 days. So when I dropped it in I added a tickler to my "Bike rear shock" project called "Bike should be ready by now" and set the date to 12 days later. I created a new Contact and put the phone number of the mechanic in the text of the contact. Then I associated the Contact with the Tickler. The tickler fired on Wednesday I think. It was flashing at me. I converted it to an Action using the new "make action" button. I gave it a context of @Call. I didn't do it straight away. So it sat there as a Next Action until this morning when I decided to make some @Calls. I click the >> link next to the Contact selector, dialed the number and found out the shock absorber was done and they'd be putting it all back together next week. I converted the
"should be ready by now" Action back to a tickler and set the date to Tuesday. The End.

So, the point of this story is that Ticklers are nice! By converting something to a tickler you get it out of your mind and off your lists. In the above story my mind is free from wondering if and when and if I should call the mechanic's.

You can also convert Projects to ticklers. (Though it might get a little strange if the project already had actions in it). But if you've got a Someday/Maybe project that is not relevant until after a certain date then try converting it to a tickler and giving it a date. This will stop it cluttering your Projects Dashboard. If you want you could put a 'note' in the text of the tiddler to remind you that it's supposed to be converted back to a project when the time comes.

Thoughts on the new way views are defined

The downside to the dashboards/views being defined in the text of a tiddler is that they are now more susceptible to a being unwittingly broken. Let's say an inexperienced 'non-power user' double clicks somewhere and ends up looking at the tiddler contents. They see things like {{cols3{ {{col{ <<mgtdList mode:globlal tags:'blah blah' >> ... }}} }}}. They are confused and have no idea what they're looking at. And worse, if they type something or delete something there they can break their dashboard with no easy way to recover it except reverting to a backup. Previously they saw an an empty box where they could type 'notes'. There was no easy way to get into trouble. Now, it is easy to get in trouble. This I see as a problem. So, all we need is a system that makes it easy for a power user to customise everything (and have their customisations preserved across updates) while also making it harder for a novice user to trash their dashboards.

Note, to set this as your default theme you can put the following in your MptwUserConfigPlugin tiddler.

config.options.txtTheme = 'MonkeyGTDPrint3x5';

It's hard to demo this but select the theme under the MGTD tab and do a print preview in Firefox and you should get the idea of what it does.

If you tried the above link and looked at the contents (click edit) on any of those, you'd notice that they are all just tiddlers now and the views are defined in wiki markup in the tiddler contents instead of in html somewhere else (via a confusing template system). And they use divs instead of tables for the column layout. (This is going to help with 3x5 printing, but that's another post). This makes them easier to read and to tweak. We still have some problems with customised views getting trashed on an upgrade, so if you do customise any of these views, make a copy of them, ie, copy their contents to a separate tiddler, eg "My Action Dashboard" and be prepared that you will need to reapply your customisations after each update. This is not a permanent thing, it's just until we have a better system for managing customisations.
There is a new toggle sidebar button (thanks Saq Imtiaz from http://tw.lewcid.org/) under the search box. If you've had problems with the sidebar taking up too much realestate, this might help.
To address the sidebar width (some want it bigger, some want it smaller) I've thrown in a theme called MonkeyGTD Narrow. It's a bit rough at the moment, but I wanted to introduce multiple themes. Find the theme selector under the MGTD tab under More...Be careful not to select the MPTW standard themes (or at least only select them if you think you can find how to change back... :)
Glitch with new ticklers fixed. When you create a tickler it has no date. This is now apparent -- previously it looked exactly as though new ticklers had a tickle date of today.

I think that's it. Since items 1 and 2 are pretty big changes cautious users might want to hold off a little and wait and see how many new bugs crawl out.

Improved repeating ticklers

You can specify that ticklers are once, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. In lists, ticklers marked as "once" show a checkbox (the way all ticklers used to do). If they are any of the others then the in lists they shows the +d/+w etc button that is applicable. So for instance you can just mark a weekly tickler as done for that week by clicking the +w without having to open the tickler. Thanks to Kralik on the mailing list for the inspiration.

Ps, I'm going to dump the disabled/enabled attribute for ticklers unless someone can think of a good reason to keep it. If you need to "disable" a tickler then just mark it as done, right?

I want to change the way that the views are done. Everything in NameDashboards really should be in separate tiddlers instead of the weird view template insertion method I've somehow ended up with. And probably shadowed ones at that. This will make customisation and building your own views a lot easier to explain. Also I'd like to use divs for the two and three column views instead of tables. This will make it easier to write the views in tiddler markup instead of html with macro attributes.

Subprojects/ associated contacts

It's a big one. We now have subprojects. We also have 'associated contacts' on all actions and projects. Plus some menu improvements. I'm slightly worried about the amount of clutter that subprojects has added to the project dashboards. (This is solvable in the long run but still...). Also I'm worried that the associated contact stuff is just a little bit too clever for it's own good. So give me feedback if you have any thoughts on these issues.

I try to will sidestep UI complications like how to show trees of projects in the Project Dashboard. As for showing actions from subprojects in a parent projects dashboard, I still not sure yet. Will have to see how things go.
